Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish, and is mutually intelligible with them to a large extent, particularly in its written form.

Swedish is a co-official language of Finland

Curiously, Swedish was an official language in Finland before it was in Sweden. Though less than 10% of Finland’s population speaks Swedish, the government has declared it one of the country’s official languages, along with Finnish.

Jobbig

In terms of common words, you can’t spend a day in Sweden without coming across this word. It can mean troublesome or trying, annoying or difficult, about people, things, events – almost anything. It’s a real all-encompassing word.

Mysa

If you’re gonna be mysa-ing in Swedish, you can do it with someone, alone, or even in a café – perhaps “to cosy up” fits the bill.

Badkruka

Someone who refuses to enter a body of water. Ex.: "Get in the lake you badkruka, it's summer!"

Old Norse

Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish. The three languages have developed from Old Norse which was spoken in the areas of Scandinavia that are now Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

Dialects

Swedish is generally divided into three main dialect areas: 1. Northern Swedish (Norrland), 2. Eastern Swedish (Finland Swedish, Estonian Swedish), 3. Svea, Gutniska (Gutamal, Gotlandic, Gutnic).

Vowels

Swedish has a basic inventory of nine long and nine short vowels. Vowel length makes a difference in word meaning.
